Infrared is used during every inspection. We can find a variety of issues with this tool. In this example, the differences in temperature within the wall were caused by rodent tunnels (mice). The likely entrance point was the garage, which is adjacent to this basement bedroom.
The dark areas indicate that the insulation has been disturbed - and is no longer providing adequate R value for the wall.
